What is an MCP server for WordPress, and is it safe?

Short answer

An MCP server lets an AI assistant such as Claude read and update your WordPress site on request, through the WordPress REST API. It's as safe as the WordPress user it signs in as: give it its own account with the narrowest role that does the job, and you can revoke it at any time.

What MCP is

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI assistants use outside tools in a consistent way. An MCP server describes what an assistant is allowed to do, such as list posts, update a page or look up an order, and carries out those requests.

For WordPress, an MCP server connects to your site's REST API. Packages such as @automattic/mcp-wordpress-remote do this with a WordPress application password, so you can ask an assistant to draft a post, fix a typo across pages or summarize recent orders without copying anything between windows.

What makes it safe, or not

  • It acts as a WordPress user, so it can only do what that user's role allows. An Editor account can manage content but not install plugins or change settings.
  • Use a dedicated user and application password for the assistant, not an administrator's own login. You can revoke the application password at any time without affecting anyone else.
  • Edits to posts and pages are saved as revisions, like any other edit, so changes can be reviewed and rolled back.
  • Start with read access and routine content tasks, and add write access to more areas only when you trust the setup.

What it's good for

Small teams get the most from it: content updates, bulk edits, finding pages that mention an outdated detail, or pulling store and membership data into a quick report, all in plain language.

  • MCP servers for WordPress: AI assistants can read and act on your WordPress content through a server you control.
  • AI integrations & automations: Repetitive work handled by workflows and AI tools that plug into the systems you already use.
  • Heritage Hills case study: Membership, email and store work for the nonprofit that protects Oklahoma City's Heritage Hills historic district, plus an MCP server so AI tools can manage the site.
